Ever since MySpace was invented, highly technological entrepreneurs are doing everything they can to think of the next big marketing idea. Some ideas have failed, others, however, have done well and have become not only great social applications, but excellent social marketing tools. Twitter, for instance, is one amazing social networking tool that has become extremely popular and that has huge potential in the social marketing world.

Setting It Up

In order to effectively use a twitter account for social marketing, it is vital that you set up your Twitter profile correctly. If you don’t, you could be taken for a spammer, which will not gain you any favors in the Twitter world. Make sure you put your real name in the username space, and not your businesses name. You can promote your business better in the Bio section. Next, make sure your web address is written correctly in the web section. Also, make sure that you put your company’s location. Having a real location is a great way to begin a connection with your potential Twitter followers.

Your profile picture is also important to consider. If you want to be very sociable, you can put a headshot of you in the picture. Many businesses, however, use their company’s logo. Make sure that the logo looks good and is recognizable when it’s minimized so that your followers will know that it’s you when you post a Tweet.

Conversations

In order to effectively use Twitter, you need to engage in conversations and to have some friends. The best way to find friends for your business on Twitter is to look first to actual people you know. Befriend them and then you can start looking to their friends. This spirals out quickly and will give you a number of followers in a fairly short amount of time.

In order to keep these followers, and to gain more, make sure that you are using your 140 characters correctly. In some cases you only have one tweet to gain the attention of your followers, so make it a good one. If you’re talking about products, include shortened links to that product, and try to keep your tweets as fun to read as possible. You can especially garner a great deal of attention if you start having giveaways or contests via your Twitter account, as this allows your readers to connect to you and to get something in the bargain.
